About Dyslexia
Dyslexia is a specific learning disability, an inherited condition that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.
Individuals with dyslexia may have difficulty with:
Memorizing their addresses, the alphabet or multiplication tables, learning to tie their shoes
Writing some letters or numbers backwards (past the first grade)
Learning to tell time on a clock with hands
Telling left from right and confusing letter pairs such as b-d, b-p, n-u and g-j
Saying sounds in the right order in multi-syllable words such as hamburger, animal and spaghetti
Handwriting is poor; letters don’t sit on the line, inconsistent use of capital letters and punctuation, odd spacing between words and letter sizing is random
Reading Failure is Preventable
Here at Breaking the Code Learning Center, children are taught differently to read. We use the Barton Reading Program and Spelling System, an Orton Gillingham based system designed specifically for people with dyslexia. With proper support, almost all people with dyslexia can become good readers and writers.
